Thai’s English rank among the worst in Asia

Thailand English proficiency has been ranked among the worst in Asia by a survey from EF (Education First). The land of smiles is only surpassed by Mongolia and Cambodia.

This yearly survey has been going on since 2011, analysing the English proficiency along the world. This year the highest proficiency was awarded to Sweden and the lowest to Libya.

The tests are done online and by people supposedly interested in English education from the beginning, so they cannot be taken as truly representative of a country’s population. Only countries with more than 400 samples are included in this study.

World ranking is bad, but improving

When we escalate to the international rankings, Thailand is still on the bottom of the list. In this case, it ranks 62 out of 70 countries.

Nevertheless, not all are bad news. English proficiency in Thailand has been irregularly increasing since this study was first published, from a score of 42 in 2011 to the actual score of 62 in 2015.
