How to know if the WiFi at your hotel will suck?

Free WiFi access is one of the most valued in-room amenities among travelers. The third one, according to this survey, just after the restaurant and the complimentary breakfast.

But just having WiFi available doesn’t guarantee your satisfaction. Actually, it happens quite often that the connection is so slow or the signal is so low that you can hardly use it at all. So how can you know if the internet at certain hotel is going to be good or bad?

Some will try to gather the answer among the hotel reviews on websites like Tripadvisor or Agoda, but it is not easy as the Internet’s speed is not usually taken into consideration when writing a review.

Other option is to visit HotelsWifiTest, a website determined to test the Internet speed in every hotel. And that includes more than a hundred hotels in Bangkok and other provinces across Thailand.

Once you search for the city in which your hotel is located, you will get the list of all the hotels. You can always use the filter field on the top to find your hotel, if available.

On the list you can actually see what to expect when you connect to your hotel’s WiFi. But beware, more megabytes don’t always mean a better connection. Look for the green star rating, which equals to WiFi Happiness. This measure is calculated considering the confidence of the measurement, the speed, latency and stability.
